Prem, the tutor of young King Kah-to-bey, is also assigned to protect him from all harm in ancient Egypt. But Prem is unsuccessful, and both he and the young king are murdered by assassins. He is mummified and placed in a case overlooking the body of Kah-to-bey.
Forty centuries later, in 1920, an archaeological expedition sponsored by businessman Stanley Preston searches for the tomb of the two mummies. The expedition is led by Sir Basil Walden, who defies the warning by its guardian, Masmid, that if they enter the tomb, a curse will befall them. The first to suffer from the curse is Sir Basil, who is bitten by a snake. Unable to continue, the archaeologist sends his son Paul to explore the tomb. Paul discovers the body of Kah-to-bey, and the well preserved mummy of Prem.
After Prem is taken to a museum, an egyptian named Hasmid uses an incantation to bring him to life so the mummy can dispose of all the desecraters of the King’s tomb. Now alive, the Mummy assumes his ancient task of protecting the boy. Prem’s first victim is Sir Basil, who is crushed to death. The Mummy’s next victim is a photographer named Harry Newton, who is murdered and dissolved in acid by Prem. Frightened, Paul realizes he is next on the Mummy’s agenda, and he disregards Inspector Barrani’s orders to stay in town until the murders are solved. Paul sends a friend to reserve a seat on the next plane out of town.
Unfortunately, the friend is also murdered by the Mummy. Paul and his co-archaeologist and ladyfriend, Claire, find themselves cornered by the Mummy with no way of escaping. After trying everything they can think of, Claire reverts to reading the incantation that revived Prem. She succeeds in causing Prem to reduce hinmself to dust. In the course of the story, Hasmid is killed by the Mummy, and a fortune-teller helps lead Prem to his victims.
