  • How It Started Out:

One of the most effective ways to scare someone is to startle them by having someone 'pop-in' out of thin air. I've heard about drop panels at various websites, but no on had any 'how-to's whatsoever, so I endeavored to create my own.

1.) Place the picture frame on the piece of plywood you wish your drop panel, keep in mind your actors height for proper placement. Cut out a the panel to be midway between the inner portion of the picture frame and the outer portion of the frame. (That way people cannot see the hole as it is hidden by the picture frame. I like to place duct tape around the border of the cut out piece of plywood. It doesnt muffle the sound of the drop at all and helps cushion some of the blow (You will find that over a long period of time, your piece of plywood will start to splinter apart, but you can easily make another one out of spare plywood.)

2.) place guide-rails (using firring strips) on the side so the panel can slide downward in a controlled fashion

3.) place a 2" x 4" about 1 foot long at the bottom to catch the drop panel and give it something to slam into

4.) place a 2" x 4" about 1 foot long at the top to for the door catch to hold the drop panel in place

5.) Create a 'lip' to prevent the drop panel from popping out back onto the actor, we placed a 'V' of a couple of firring strips to keep the panel in place.

    BA-BAM! and your done!
